Why Women Should Weightlift

Are you looking for a new way to challenge yourself at the gym? Have you ever considered adding weightlifting to your fitness routine? If you're a woman interested in strength training, then it's time to embrace the weight room and start lifting! In this article, we will explore the top 5 reasons why women should incorporate weightlifting into their workout regimen.

## 1. Improve Brain Function

One of the most obvious benefits of weightlifting is the ability to build strength. Lifting weights helps to increase muscle mass, which in turn improves overall strength and power. Improving heart health also means improving brain health. Daily physical activity of all forms is beneficial for your body and brain. Exercise is a critical lifestyle factor for improving brain health in the long run.

## 2. Boost Metabolism

Another reason why women should embrace weightlifting is its ability to boost metabolism. When you engage in strength training, your body continues to burn calories even after you've finished working out. This increased metabolic rate can help with weight management and overall fat loss. By incorporating weightlifting into your routine, you can challenge your muscles in new ways and see significant gains in your physical capabilities.

## 3. Improve Overall Health

In addition to building strength and boosting metabolism, weightlifting has numerous other health benefits. Regularly lifting weights can help improve bone density, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, and enhance cardiovascular health. It can also help improve posture and reduce the risk of injury.

## 4. Increase Confidence

Lifting weights not only has physical benefits but also mental ones as well. Many women report feeling more confident and empowered after starting a weightlifting routine. Seeing progress in the gym can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment that carries over into other areas of life.

## 5. Be a Part of a Fitness Community

Finally, one of the best aspects of embracing weightlifting as a woman is joining a supportive community of like-minded individuals. The fitness world is full of strong women who are lifting heavy weights and challenging themselves every day. By becoming part of this community, you can find motivation, support, and inspiration from others on a similar journey.

Having said this, you can also join communities online that are women focused on fitness and health and some of my favourite accounts to follow are women who are staying healthy at ALL ages. I also find just having your friend, spouse, sibling or someone to keep you accountable is key. You can use tools such as the Myfitnesspal app, a Fitbit or Apple watch to keep yourself and your fitness partner accountable to each other.

If you're ready to give weightlifting a try but don't know where to start, consider trying this 15-minute full-body strength routine below:

Warm-up: 5 minutes of light cardio (jumping jacks or jogging or walking quickly on the treadmill or cycle)

Squats: 3 sets x 12 reps

For a more advanced routine you can try:

Deadlifts: 3 sets x 10 reps

Bench Press: 3 sets x 8 reps
-

Bent-over Rows: 3 sets x 10 reps

Remember to start with light weights and focus on proper form before increasing intensity. Start slow and work your way up to more weight or reps gradually.

Another app tool I often recommend to my patients is the [Nike Training app](https://www.nike.com/ca/ntc-app) which is a free app you download on your phone and you can start with anywhere from 3-5 minute workouts up to 30 minutes and there are HIIT as well as yoga and weight and core exercises.

As you can see, there are many benefits and reasons why women should embrace weightlifting at the gym. So grab those dumbbells or barbells and join the growing trend of women heading to the weight room for an empowering workout experience.
